With the captain’s mind in shambles, Jon and Tom set out to find the passage home through the black mountain range, hoping to find a cure for Baltsaros’s madness. However, when the men are forced to part ways, darkness takes root in the schism created; fate, lust, and vengeance become obsessions threatening to tear apart the fragile bonds holding the three together.

Following on the heels of Sacrificed, Fated takes the pirates on a quest to find those responsible for the captain’s bloody beginnings. But can they survive what awaits them where past and present meet?

Baal’s Heart audiobooks – sample & update

For everyone enjoying the audiobooks, I’ve sent over the manuscripts of both Fated and Careened to Michael Ferraiuolo and, barring any setbacks, they should be available late July/early August. Then, I’m planning on robbing a bank, because I want him to narrate Kestrel’s Talon ;)

Also, I’ve had a few messages from readers wanting more of a sample than what is available at Audible. So here is the entirety of chapter 8 of Caged: Love and Treachery on the High Seas. If you haven’t read it, it might not make a whole lot of sense… I don’t think it’s much of a spoiler though. Listen at your own discretion (The sample is NSFW) – Chapter 8: Nelson’s Folly

Queeromance Ink – New Book Site!

There’s a new site in town: Queeromance Ink is a directory of LGBTIQA romance and related books, with links to purchase them from a variety of other sources, including publishers, distributors, and in many cases, the authors themselves.

Wonder where you can purchase my books? Check out my page. :)

Goodbye, Kindle Unlimited, Goodbye! (for now?)

I’ve made the decision to pull my books from Kindle Unlimited for the time being. Why am I saying things like “for now” and “for the time being”? Well… it is a hard decision to make.

Here, I’ll show you why:

Pros of being in KU

Cons of being in KU

  • Increased visibility with Amazon customers
  • Use of Amazon stuff like Kindle Countdown Deals
  • Only have to upload my files to one place
  • Less people return my books
  • I make more money overall
  • I might make more money but at less than half a cent per page read, it really devalues books overall, and not just mine.
  • It’s less than half a cent per page because the money comes from a pot that is split up every month amongst everyone enrolled in KU, and there are a lot of scammers publishing fake books or books that are rigged to make the reader reach the end (in which case Amazon pays the scammer for every page in the book), so us non-scammers have to share the pot with these assholes. (tl;dr: Authors have to share profits with scammers)
  • When you are enrolled in KU, you can only sell your books through Amazon. So I might get great visibility with Amazon customers, but folks who prefer to buy elsewhere are shit out of luck.
  • I am at the mercy of Amazon’s sudden policy changes – which have largely failed to curtail the scammer problem. *two-finger salute*
  • Amazon continues to censor, ban, and stonewall its authors and paying customers.
  • I have to deal with the uploading files all over the place when I make a change… but… enh. *shrug*

So there you have it folks: my decision making process.

As of today, Caged, Sacrificed, Fated, The Complications of T, The Last Nights of The Frangipani Hotel are out and will be followed by the F.I.S.T.S. books on June 1st and Careened on June 20.

Kestrel’s Talon will be out around August 13.

By pulling out my books, it means that I stand to make less money, which is what makes it such a shitty decision: Ho hum… do I stay in a fucked up system, chained to their exclusivity clause to make more cheddar, or do I go wide and make my books available to a wider audience… at a possible loss? (Oh yeah… Something else about the exclusivity thing? You have to stay in the program for 90 days. Then you can either opt out—so no KU and you can sell your books in other places—or renew like a chump.)

Ultimately, I don’t write for the money… Even with my books in KU I don’t make anywhere near a living wage. It’s hard work but I write because I love doing it, and I get to share my stories with like-minded folk.

But. Well. Money is nice. *shakes head*

Anyway… I think from now on (unless I cave and go back to wearing the golden handcuffs) I’ll put new releases into KU for the 90 days but not renew. Who knows.

(and feel free to chime in… what’s your opinion on this?)

April Showers Bring May Flowers… Yeah… SNOW showers.

Bugger the weather.

Anyhoo… I just realized I haven’t said a word here in almost a month so I figured I’d catch you up on what’s the what here at Castle Deckard.

  1. I’ve passed off some of Kestrel’s Talon to be edited. It’s nearly done and I’ll post a release date when I have one.
  2. I’m still not sure what I’m going to finish next, but I’d like to get #3 from The Actor’s Circle out by summer. Called The Window in Between, it’s a third pair to join the cast, and like the other two books, deals with themes of self-discovery and acceptance. Book #4, as yet unnamed, will reunite the six men in one location. I’ve already written so much dialogue for #4… I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.
  3. There’s also Learning to Speak starring Saban from Baal’s Heart… I just need to get it started. I know the story.
  4. Speaking of Baal’s Heart…. April 11th is the one year anniversary of Fated: Blood and Redemption and will go on sale at 8am (EST) in the US and 8am (GMT) in the UK. It’s a Kindle countdown sale, so the earlier you grab it, the better. I’ll post again on Monday about it.
  5. Finally…

Luce whistled to himself as the elevator made its way down, wondering what it was that absolutely required his physical presence.  The memo had been dramatically short and to the point:

Come to your old office. Tell no one.

Despite being happy with his work Above, Luce’d gotten a fun little thrill out of ducking out for the afternoon to attend this intriguingly clandestine meeting. Luce grinned and straightened his paisley tie, smoothing it down over his periwinkle blue shirt as the lift came to a stop with a soft ding. Walking with long, straight backed strides, Luce nodded in greeting to the workers in the hallway, a few of them staring in wide-eyed amazement as he passed them by. Hearing whispers, he grinned to himself.
After rounding another bend, down to the main floor of the common area, he took the stairs up to the office two at a time. Pausing at the doorway, his hand lifted to knock, he smirked. What was that… excitement he felt? It had been a while…
Luce rapped the door just once for decorum and entered, walking into the well-appointed office with a bright smile.

“Now what did you have me come all the way down here for? You know I’m a busy man…” he said to the figure in the chair. However, when the chair swivelled around and he saw that it was just the foreman, Luce frowned.

“Saul? Where’s Byron?” Luce asked the big Abaddonian, a touch apprehensive.

The demon, hulking and tusked with eyes like bullet holes, ducked his head like a shamed dog.

“He’s not here, sir,” Saul mumbled.

Luce clenched his jaw, his whole body tense.

“Well… where is he?”

“That’s the thing, sir,” replied Saul in a meek voice. “We can’t find him anywhere…”

That’s right… There’s a sequel to Devil brewing in my skull and that’s how I think I’ll start it. It probably won’t be a long book, but I’m going to try to get it out in time for Halloween of next year. :)

And that’s it! I have to get back to writing.

I’m back and did you know you could win some stuff?

Howdy! I’m back in the land of snow and cold and ready to get back to writing. I did “cheat” a bit while I was on the beach and did the equivalent of scribbling down scenes on napkins (Notes) and scraps of paper (iA Writer) which I started to sort through yesterday. Kestrel’s Talon has hit 60k which is about the halfway mark in the story. I think. I’m a little obsessed with this story… Instead of reading the 10 or so books I had in my pile to read while in Barbados, I spent a lot of time reading over what I’d written of Kestrel and editing. However… the one book I did read was a huge one—Xperiment by Dan Skinner—so there’s that.

But mostly, and I really swear, I just relaxed, suntanned, swam, drank, people-watched, chilled out… I have a post in me about Barbados in general, but that will probably be next week. In the meantime, I’ve put all my vacation pics at the bottom of this post if you want to take a look.
